Introduction

The atomic mass (also called atomic weight) is the average mass of an atom of an element, measured in unified atomic mass units (u) or daltons (Da). What is Atomic Mass?

What is Molecular Mass?

Molecular mass is the sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule: Molecular Mass (in u) = Σ (Atomic Mass × Number of Atoms).

  • For H₂O: (2 × 1.008) + (1 × 15.999) = 18.015 u
  • For CO₂: (1 × 12.011) + (2 × 15.999) = 44.009 u
  • For C₆H₁₂O₆: (6 × 12.011) + (12 × 1.008) + (6 × 15.999) = 180.156 u
